The Muscatatuck River winds approximately 59 miles through Jennings County. It is an important resource that provides drinking water to North Vernon, supports a very diverse fish population, is home to various waterfowl and provides recreational swimming, canoeing and hiking.

The Jennings County landscape is quite spectacular as the winding river has cut its erratic path through the limestone bedrock, creating many bluffs and waterfalls. Hardwood forests loom above the bluffs and buffer the river, yielding habitat for numerous species as well as some of the best wildflower spectacles in Indiana.

Over the past 150 years, our rivers and streams have been used as a means to "get rid of waste". The extent of this usage has had real ramification that threatened our standard of living. Over time, several laws have been developed to help us protect the water resource. However, people still break the law and pollute our waters. The Friends of the Muscatatuck River Society strive to change the mindset of those who pollute.
