Friends of the Muscatatuck River Society Monthly Minutes NEXT RIVER SWEEP WILL BE JUNE 12 Opening: 6-1-04 Call to order by Secretary Moore at 7:05PM. Attendance: Tom and Sherida Moore Kevin Jayne Larry Allsop Cheryl Trisler Everett Sparkman Simeon Stearns Sandra Clark Dan Shade Minutes: Approved as read. Treasurer's Report: Local balance is $585.60. Sandra has $45 of t-shirt money to be deposited. Online access to our banking status was mentioned and recommended. HHH balance is $1000. Old Business: 319 Grant- QAPP has been approved! Fifty-four education hours out of a needed 300 have been completed. The education coordinators will meet in June with Terry Stephenson and Phyllis of the HHH. Bridge Report- they are complete and ready for your perusal. Policy Proposals: Canoe sweeper responsibilities: 1 Experienced paddler; 2 Always last canoe of the group; 3 Stays within sight of the group; 4 Has communication with the outside and the leader; 5 Carries the FMRS dry bag. Canoe leader responsibilities: 1 Experienced canoeist; 2 Does not move downstream until the sweeper is in the river; 3 No one passes the leader; 4 Has communication with the sweeper. These two policies were moved and approved by unanimous decision. Simeon or Sandra will print the policies on 3x5 cards, laminate them, attach to a lanyard and have them ready for the June 12th River sweep. We also need to develop a safety rules handout for the next clean up. Weight tallies- the Scale Master, Frank Biehle, needs to meet with the drivers before they start their work and inform the drivers of the protocols for getting the trash weighed. The scale master will also give all group leaders a total weight for their site. Registrar- needs to be a separate person that only does data entry of participants and their corresponding information and gives to the secretary for publication We are going to see if the truck drivers can meet Frank at Eaton's at 9:30 on the mornings of river sweeps. Each team leader on the leader checklist, which was approved, will keep tire count at the site.. The lists will be laminated and written on with grease pencils because of moisture issues. Water quality survey- no results to date. We will distribute these at lunchtime of the June 12th River sweep. County trash pick-up and recycling center- Sherida will write a complimentary letter to the editor concerning the new recycling center. Water Grant- Sim is researching phase 2 of the 319 grant and will now be assisted by Sandra in this effort which should be to Amy Henninger by 8-30-04, since the grant deadline is October. Projector- Sandra is working on getting a picture with the Greens. Jr. Heilman will head up a crew at the June 12th sweep to clean the bank and the sandbar opposite the Calli Preserve along the golf course. April 17th- very successful, Garrie Ritchie of Ritchie Appliances used his winch to bring up the old appliances. Several things have been dumped there since the clean up. T-shirts- Sherida will sell them at the sweep. They are on sale at the Visitor's Center now. NEW BUSINESS Brochures- Simeon has published several new brochures which are being distributed. Kevin took some to distribute. Contact Sim or Sandra to get some if you so desire. Montrow donation- 5 cents a pound up to $1000 per year- very generous! Centra has expressed an interest in being a corporate sponsor. Chamber of Commerce dues, $62.50 were voted down. We will spend the resources on river sweep necessities. Action Register for June 12: Food- McDonald's 25 burgers and fries (possibly more if needed)- Kevin. Subway's 40 subs, Dan, Christina and/or Sherida (Tobias, if needed) will pick up the food. First Methodist will provide coffee and donuts in the morning. Drinks- Water-Simeon from Wal*Mart, soft drinks- Dan from IGA Gloves- Simeon got 3 boxes of latex from Wal*Mart, will try to get some clear gloves Registrar- Susannah and Christina Koons Trucks- Cheryl will talk to Jim Reeves and discuss the possibility of a 9:30 start time. Dan will talk to Donnie. Greg Martin has agreed to lead the sweep at this site! Winches or other equipment may be necessary. Sewage plant/golf course bank and sand bar- Junior Heilman is working on the details and will be the leader Vernon Cemetery- Kevin will lead this site. Anyone else that would like to be a site leader needs to respond to this e-mail so that we can make preparations. Sim has permission to get up to 50 bumper stickers made before the sweep. The possibility of a high school logo contest was discussed and an elementary river art contest/exhibition. There was some discussion about the grant- being on schedule, hours worked, etc. Sim had left by then, so nothing definite was determined. Use the TIP LINE.
