Friends of the Muscatatuck River Society Monthly Minutes NEXT RIVER SWEEP WILL BE OCTOBER 2 Opening: 8-3-04 Call to order by Secretary Moore at 5:15PM. Attendance: Tom and Sherida Moore Kevin Jayne Elizabeth Trybula Simeon Stearns Jo Ann Hallawell Joann Moore Larry Allsop Minutes: Approved as read. Treasurer's Report: Local balance is $527.76. We received a reimbursement check from the grant for $915.27 for t-shirts. We deposited $800 on a display board. HHH balance is $520. HHH is using that for grant supplies and then reimbursing with grant money. Old Business: Fall Festival Partnering- Elizabeth Trybula was present from the Clifty Creek watershed group to discuss joining efforts for the October 2nd river sweep in order to reach more people and clean more river. Clifty Creek cleaners will be attacking two sites and we will hit our regular run plus anything else that we can cover with the available personnel. After completing the sweep, participants will receive a t-shirt and a ticket to the evening celebration. The river volunteer appreciation celebration at shelter house #4 in the Muscatatuck County Park will include three live bands (H2O Bluegrass, Franny Hall, and maybe either/or Assorted Flavors or Early Evening) performing from 6 to 9, hamburgers on the grill with all the fixings wholly provided by Jay-C Store Inc., side dishes may come from K B Specialty Foods of Decatur county, and warm drinks, tea, and lemonade from the Bartholomew District Office. Mariah Foods will be asked for hotdogs and/or links of some sort. Set Steel and Stevie Boswell will provide two flat bed trailers for a stage. We need straw also. The county sheriff's and Civil Defense will be invited to the meal. We will try several strategies to publicize the event. Sim will ask SWCD to mail our flier to its list. Camera- FMRS, The Visitor's Center, and the County Park purchased a Canon EOS Rebel digital DS6041 with macro and telescopic lenses. Our part was $1100, which finished Task D of the grant. The Visitor's Center is paying the remaining capital, and the County Park is provided a sign for us valued at $1000. This is a winning partnership. Billboard Sign- the design is approved and we are awaiting a location. Jo Ann mentioned contacting Jan Tucker to possibly place a billboard in town at a discounted price. Travelling display- we put down an $800 deposit on a $1500 display board. The price does not include 6 panels yet to be produced. This comes from the educational funds in the grant. FMRS sign for the Park office- the County Park will provide the $1000 sign as their part of the camera. Follow up grant decision- It was decided to try to secure a continuing grant in order to advance our cause/mission. Sherida and Jo Ann will contact Andy Ertel and try to get a proposal ready for a preview deadline of September 1st. Simeon has already been working on notes for the grant. T-shirts- the grant is reimbursing for the purchase of the shirts, so we must give them away from now until they are gone. All workers at the next clean up will get a shirt. Monarch, Hoosier Sporting Goods, Uppling, and Richman purveyors of shirts will be consulted on a new round of shirts from the grant for the spring. They will hopefully be blue with red collars or piping and white letters. The mascot will be the turtle Larry had that was shaped like an 8; there will be a naming contest. The logo will possibly be a stewardship idea with fish and a globe or possibly a contest as well. NEW BUSINESS Jo Ann's web work- we are going to implement this in our middle school series program. We will also try to get it on the web-site with a counter installed to count hits in order to track usage and, hopefully, education. Good job, Jo Ann. Kevin Jayne was elected Vice President Pro-Tem to fill out the term of Ken Huff. The resignation of Sandra Clark was reluctantly accepted. We cannot say enough about what Sandra has done for the group in her many roles to date and look forward to her efforts in the future. Good luck, Sandra. Begin October 2nd sweep planning- we need an assigned coordinator/assignor on sweep day. We nominated Ken Huff (Larry offered to help on this). Many thanks to Elizabeth Trybula for her efforts with her group, our group, and the shepherding of the river environment. Special apologies to Larry and Joann for our inadequate notification of the time change. Use the TIP LINE.
