Hazardous material presentation by David Turner of the Jennings County Sheriff Dept.: Officer Turner brought examples of meth lab components that can be found at cleanup sites: 'Pill dough' (made from pills and solvent in a jar), used/stained coffee filters, plastic tubing, valves and fittings, organic solvents, hydrochloric acid, empty tanks (fire extinguishers, propane), jars and bottles fitted with tubes, containers of fexophedrine or other cold medications, 'felony funnels' made from plastic bottles, lithium batteries and red phosphorus. The definition of 'precursory evidence' was also discussed. Officer Turner noted the most popular method of preparation is the Nazi Cook or Birch method (using anhydrous), where the anhydrous is stored in unsafe containers. Jennings County ranks as 10th in state for number of labs found; next year the rank could be 8th. More meth preparers are cooking in wooded areas, which is much harder to detect. Most users ingested by smoking, anal insertion, intravenous injection. The majority of arrests are male over the age of 25. If suspected items are found, don't pick up; contact authorities such as the Sheriff's Department, Ferguson Harbor DEA. Officer Turner suggests wearing safety glasses and rubber/vinyl gloves (Sheriff dept can supply); he suggested carrying bicarbonate soda to neutralize the harmful chemicals. He and Tom Moore suggested using surveyor flags or cardboard boxes to mark on cleanup sites until authorities are notified. Officer Turner noted that, in March, Comcast Channel 14 will show the video "Crank County", a documentary about meth labs. Check local listings for times.
